Greetings, all you fine folks out there in radioland.

One of my writing students broke her finger recently. She wanted to write about the incident but can't read her own writing easily. "Why don't you call me?" I said. "I can type as fast as you can talk."

So she did. At one point she mentioned her husband loved to listen to old radio programs while tinkering with cars, "shows like Hopalong Cassidy and Johnny Dollar."

Johnny Dollar?! Those two words brought back waves of memories. And that haunting theme song? What WAS it? I remembered it was an obscure classical piece, knew I owned it but couldn't remember the composer. So this morning, I turned out the CD collection and there, the last one to be pulled out, it was.

It's from the opening movement of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Symphony in F Sharp.
