Famous Weekly Old-Time Radio Shows
Edgar Bergen - Charlie McCarthy Show
First heard in May, 1937, on NBC's Chase and Sanborn Hour, Bergen & McCarthy were sponsored by that coffee brand until 1949, when they moved to CBS and picked up Coca-Cola as the primary sponsor. An often-asked question about the show was "how could a ventriloquist be so popular on the radio?" In addition to Charlie McCarthy, Mr Bergen was the voice for Mortimer Snerd and Effie Klinker. Jim Backus (voice of "Mr Magoo" on TV) also appeared on the show. Here is a 48 second clip of The Edgar Bergen Hour, on Dec. 18, 1955.
