P A U L T E M P L E : T H E R A D I O S H O W S ------- ----------- - ----- --------- --------- 1938 - 2006 First Show: 08 Apr 1938 Last Show: 07 Aug, 2006 Number Shows: 195 Audition Show: none Series Description: Paul Temple, socialite and amateur sleuth, and his glamorous and intuitive wife, Steve, provided listeners in the United Kingdom with some first rate detective radio serials from 1938 into the present. The stories were the creation of Francis Durbridge who scripted the BBC productions. The original shows, whic ran from 1938 through 1968 were produced was Martyn C. Webster. Paul and Steve inhabit a sophisticated, well-dressed world of cocktails and fast cars, where the women are chic, and the men still wear cravats. The couple fit their world and are frequently called in to help solve crimes in this world by Sir George Forbes of Scotland Yard. At first, there adventures were only broadcast on the Midland service of the BBC. After the second serial, Paul Temple shows and serials were broadcast nationally. Paul was first played by Hugh Morton. He was followed over the years by Carl Bernard, Richard Williams, Barry Morse, Howard Marion Crawford, Kim Peacock and Peter Coke. The first Steve was played by Bernadette Hodgson. Marjorie Westbury took over the role in the fifth serial and played the part in every serial up through 1968. She even played a minor role in the very first serial. The radio serials spawned a number of novelizations of the serials, novels by Francis Durbridge, four films, two TV series and even a comic strip. The four films are: 1946 - Send For Paul Temple 1948 - Calling Paul Temple 1950 - Paul Temple's Triumph 1952 - Paul Temple Returns Although the early radio serials and shows are lost, ten serials have survived and are available from the BBC, either directly through their web site, www.bbcshop.com, or through other retailers. In 2006, the BBC again brought Paul Temple to the airwaves over Radio 4. This was a new production of the 1947 Sullivan Mystery, using the original script with vintage sound effects and music, even using vintage microphones and carefully reproduced 1940s upper class accents.
