~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CHARTER for OTR The Old Time Radio Electronic Newsletter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Digest Name 2. Definition and Purpose of the OTR Digest 3. Qualifications for Membership 4. Use of Posted Information 5. Funding A1. Submitting articles A2. How to Unsubscribe from this list 1. Digest Name: "OTR" is an acronym for "Old Time Radio". "Old Time Radio", in turn is the commonly accepted name used by collectors and vendors of materials associated with radio programming and programs affiliated with the "Golden" or "Silver" ages of radio (usually defined as that time between the inception of radio broadcasting and the early 1960s). The "OTR Digest" is a compilation of articles electronically published in the internet's "OTR Newsletter". The terms "OTR Digest" and "OTR Newsletter" are often used interchangeably in this document. Although these names may be similar to those used by publishers of -paper- OTR newsletters, the names "OTR Digest" and "OTR Newsletter" as used herein, are unique and exclusive to the distribution and production of the electronic Internet publication known by those names, and to the creators / maintainers / administrators of the OTR Digest. [The OTR Newsletter was created, and is maintained by William Pfeiffer (wdp@airwaves.com) and Lou Genco (lgenco@old-time.com) William is the publisher, and handles the subscription and distribution of the digest and Lou is the resident guru on OTR. (Personal email is accepted by both.)] 2. Definition and Purpose of the OTR Digest The OTR Digest is an unmoderated, periodic email newsletter dedicated to discussions about the creative aspects of old-time (nostalgic, or "golden age of radio") radio programs, programming and preservation. Subscribers can read and contribute articles whose topics include historical radio drama, serials, adventure stories, mystery programs, old commercials, and other matters pertaining to the creative sides of OTR, Including personal vignettes of announcers, actors and other personalities. Critiques of nostalgic radio programs, as well as summaries of series or individual presentations are welcomed. Discussions about contemporary incarnations of Radio Theatre are generally accepted, but are not the main focus of this list (see various rec.arts and alt.arts groups for discussions of this type). Discussions of OTR-era music (Big Band, etc.) are acceptable in relation to OTR broadcasts, however in-depth discussions of the music of the period (musicians, charts, orchestras etc) should be taken to one of the lists or groups which specialize in the Big Band and Swing era. Articles concerning the preservation of OTR programs are also accepted, as are the descriptions of historical methodologies used in the production of OTR programs. The OTR Newsletter focuses on nostalgic *programs and programming* rather than antique hardware (old radios, microphones, recording devices) or generalized radio trivia (technical matters, broadcast hardware, regulation and such) (the former topic is covered by newsgroup rec.antiques.radio+phono, and the latter by rec.radio.broadcasting and AIRWAVES RADIO JOURNAL). Subscribers may post first-hand comments about the service provided to them by commercial vendors of OTR recordings. Subscribers may also list their OTR libraries and collections for exchange of public-domain tapes, as long as the OTR Newsletter is not used as a strictly commercial vehicle (commercial vendors may send email to web-services@airwaves.com for more information) and as long as matters of copyrights are considered and respected. The Digest does not make any claims as to the legitimacy of any offers made herein. It is up to each individual to determine the details of any trade or sale offered in these pages. Reports of radio stations carrying OTR rebroadcasts, as well as notifications of OTR conventions or clubs are encouraged. ---HOWEVER--- Flames and personal attack are not tolerated in the OTR maillist. Extensive "gossip" rather than information is also discouraged. Please take all flames and negative OTR gossip to private email. The administrators of this list are the final determiners of what is, and is not, flame or flame-bait. The OTR Digest is not a general nostalgia list. Discussions must remain related to the definition of OTR as presented above. There are other lists and forums dealing with such things as Golden Age of Television, Old Movies, generic collectibles etc. 3. Qualifications for Membership: Subscriptions to OTR are free (except for local connect charges), and available to anyone who is equipped with Internet (or Internet gatewayed) email service. Generally, membership will continue until the subscriber voluntarily unsubscribes. On rare occasions, service to individual subscribers may be discontinued by list administrators for repeated and/or malicious departures from the charter. OTR is an unmoderated list (that means that nobody "approves" posts before they are entered in the Digest.) However the list is monitored and users are expected to adhere to its charter and guidelines. Users who stray too far from the charter will be asked (in private email) to stay on-topic and those who continually or maliciously violate the charter will be removed. At no time should subscribers take administrative matters to the general list. Always take up such matters with one of the list administrators, and never take it to the list. Administrative matters brought to the general list may be grounds for removal. 4. Use of Posted Information The creators/maintainers of OTR are not liable for the consequences of any use or misuse of data or information posted in the Newsletter. OTR is provided as a forum for exchange of information, and no guarantee of accuracy, veracity or propriety is made. Generally, OTR posts are in the Public Domain, except where noted. The list of OTR subscribers is private and will not be released or sold. Permission is not granted by the administrators of this list to use the posted email addresses for any purpose other than direct, personal communications to that individual. Compilation of any new mailing list from the published email addresses is not granted by the administrators of the OTR list. 5. Funding OTR Digest receives no funds from your Internet provider.
