Not only did he appear as a great character actor in films, and on many radio shows, Jack was a real funny guy with his own "Jack Kirkwood Show". The regular skit with the "Little Loudmouth Players" was always a riot. But, If you did not appreciate his type fo wild comedy, you may not have been his fan. Such as the books he was working on": Never Open A Can of Tomato Juice While Wearing A White Suit".... or... " She Died From Smoking in Bed in Hot Springs, Arkansas"! --Or .."How to Drug Race Horses For Fun And Profit"........(hahahaha)

I believe Jack's gag writer was Jay Sommers, who went on to write for Spike Jones and Green Acres.

Wasn't he the guy who had a line something like "Put something in the pot, boy?" My dad really enjoyed that comedian.

Yeah...."Put Something In The Pot,Boy!"--- hahaha--yep, one of Jack's favorite sayings! ..and "If I had ears like that,I would tell Bugs Bunny to go find another job. I'm taking over!"..or---"Oh Please, get yourself a job on the radio, so I won't have to tune in and have to listen to you!"hahaha-crazy lines and delivery only Jack could make work. A little like Groucho's answer to a smart aleck: "Go bore a hold in your head, and let the sap run out!!!!!!"

I was fortunate enough to get into the studio audience of one of crazy Jack's 15-minute shows at the old CBS Studios on Sunset, a couple of blocks east of Vine, in Hollywood in 1945. He was as free-wheeling in the studio as he was over the air. His vocalist was Jeannie McKeon, and his real-life wife, Lillian Lee (or Leigh?) appeared with him, among others. At that time, his show (called "Mirth and Madness") aired at 10:00 PM CST, just ahead of crooner Jack Smith, the guy "with a smile in his voice." Kirkwood was quite portly and had a pencil-thin mustache. Lordy, I can hear his deep, raspy voice now ..., "They got me, Lil; I'm a-goin', Lil ..."
