I have a book which shows photos of various radio personalities from OTR...

One photo shows Will Rogers standing at an old carbon microphone. The call letters "KHJ" are on the microphone, and under the mic is a microphone stand with the words "Columbia Broadcasting System"...

I believe Will Rogers did a show on the CBS network in the 1930s when the Los Angeles Columbia affiliate was KHJ (before CBS bought KNX, around 1936).

I'm wondering what year the picture of Rogers was taken...Would anyone know or like to make an educated guess?

Thanks for your help.

According to John Dunning's "ON THE AIR", Will Rogers was on CBS twice, April 6 to June 22, 1930 and again from January 6 to June 9, 1935. As Rogers was a Los Angeles area resident by then, it would make sense for his programs to originate at KHJ, (which, by the way, became a Mutual affiliate on Dec 9,1935)

Thanks for your help...and you are quite right about the date KHJ switched from CBS to the Mutual network...

When CBS purchased the more powerful, 50,000 watt KNX in Los Angeles, KHJ was without national programming. So, KHJ's owner, the Don Lee Broadcasting System, helped make the Mutual Broadcasting System a national network with KHJ and their own west coast network of stations around California, Oregon and Washington. Don Lee did much the same thing about 1929-1930 to help William s. Paley make CBs a national network by adding his west coast affiliates to the CBS network.

I believe a good history of the Don Lee/Mutual network is on Elizabeth McLeod's website and John Schroeder's website on history of San Francisco radio, since Lee also owned KFRC rad
