I've been trying to think of old time radio shows that have something to do with California. Can anyone come up with a program name or names of such things as "The Barbary Coast" or anything about the mining days, or San Francisco, or earthquakes or any of the early personalities or music or Hollywood, or any other of the state's areas in any era? I know of the song "California Here I Come", and that Milton Berle had a show regarding California in Feb. 1948. I think the series "Romance of the Ranchos" was of pre-California. Surely there must be other shows or episodes on the subject, but I'm drawing a blank. Thanks in advance for your ideas!

"OTRNOW" has some shows called "California Melodies" from 1940 to 1942."Empire Builders" may well have some of its shows based on the state of California.Go to "Google" and type in "OTRNOW" and "OTRCAT." They both have some of these shows.I will search around and see if I can find some more, I hope I have been of some help.Good Luck!

Also try "American Trail" they have one episode on the California Goldrush. You can get copies from OTRCAT, OTRNOW, and many other dealers have them.

Thank you, both Bob's, for your information. The AMERICAN TRAIL "Gold Rush" would be perfect. I've found CALIFORNIA MELODIES, as suggested, which plays music of the times, but really doesn't have anything to do with the state, as it seems the name would imply. It's nice to listen to, anyway. I appreciate your help, thanks again! If you come up with any more, please let me know.

Have Gun, Will Travel was an OTR "adult" western, where the protagonist had a San Francisco hotel room as his home/base of operations, and where "Heyboy" the Chinese hotel's staff member and his girlfriend/fiance (?) were secondary characters. Usually the beginning and ending of each episode found the main character in Frisco.

Wyllis Cooper, who lived for a while in Santa Monica and later in Hollywood, often used California as a setting for his "Quiet Please" series. The very first episode, "Nothing Behind the Door" takes place in and around Mount Wilson Observatory. Other episodes include "Camera Obscura" (Santa Monica), "Light the Lamp for Me" (partly set in an old California mission), Summer Goodbye (Las Virgenes Canyon), "The Little Morning," "The Vale of Glencoe" and probably some others I'm forgetting. One of the lost episodes, "The Gothic Tale," takes place at Port Hueneme.

I think that OTRCat has a show called Romance of the Ranchos in which each episode tells the story of one of the great ranches from when the Spanish ruled California.

I believe quite a few WHISTLER episodes take place in California.
I don't know if the locations used are real or fiction.

And of course, for radio detective noir, nothing beats "Pat Novak for Hire," which eas set on the docks of San Francisco
