I heard the fine TV, stage and screen actor Jerry Orbach has died of cancer in New York this week. Although not known for any radio work, his mom was a radio singer in the 1930's and I think that this should mean a tribute in our OTR message column...God Bless You, LENNIE! He came from good genes!!!

Here! Here! I think that millions will agree with this astute observation, history/geneology lesson, and tribute! Through his Law and Order character 'Lennie', Jerry gained the respect, love and admiration from all who knew him in this way. He will be missed. He was one of those special people who had a way of becoming close to you, though never actualy meeting you. Who he really was/is, came through in a way that many didn't realise until hearing the news of his untimely demise. I join you in homage to a man whose departure will assuradly leave a large hole in prime time television, not to mention the lives of many.

When I lived in New York in the 60s, Jerry Orbach was still playing El Gallo in The Fantastics, the longest running off-Broadway show ever. I passed the little white house on Sheridan Street called the Sheridan Street Playhouse many times but never attended the play. There's a book on the making of The Fantastics where the part of El Gallo, the mystical carnival go-between who gets the two lovers together, was offered to a very young high school student named Jerry Orbach because he was much older looking. He nearly turned the part down because he was also offered a part in the Broadway musical Oklahoma
