| Just listened to an old radio episode of YOU ARE THERE which was a 1/2 hour story related to the origin of jazz. It was about the inception & some of the early "stars" of jazz (Jelly Roll Morton, etc.)who evolved at that amazing time. It was great, and I wondered if there were any other radio programs, other than that single episode of YOU ARE THERE, regarding jazz? Was there ever another program that had an episode or more of the jazz era in story form, maybe LUX or DESTINATION FREEDOM? Any about Louis Armstrong or any of the other famous jazz performers? Am hoping some of you experts might have recall of such a thing. Thank you in advance for your ideas and information! |

| "The Legend of Jimmy Blue Eyes" - an episode of CBS Workshop. If memory serves, Jimmy Dodd (of Mickey Mouse Club fame) was the narrator, and Manny Kline was the trumpet player. A fantasy story of Jimmy selling his soul to the Devil to find that one elusive note. |

Jack Webb, an ardent jazz fan, produced a radio series called Pete Kelly's Blues about the leader of a 1920's jazz combo in Kansas City. The series was a work of fiction, but the atmosphere and sensibility of the period were brilliantly captured. Each episode would have at least one jazz number arranged by the great Dixieland
clarinetist and arranger Matty Matlock. These arrangements featured tight, hard driving ensemble playing and powerful virtuoso solo work without a trace of corn. All of them had a soulful, bluesy quality to them. |
