First off, let me apologize. I don't think this may be the place to ask this, but others may have this problem too, so I thought, "Well, maybe....."
I recently purchased a new computer with Windows XP. I don't know if this is the problem or not. But whenever I go to the log page and try to view some of the OTR logs, the file comes up as a notepad file and is complete gibberish. I have tried checking and unchecking 'word wrap' and that doesn't help. Makes the problem worse, really. I thought installing Word 2002 would help, but it hasn't. The logs were readable on my old computer running Windows 98. What can I do to get the logs to open in something other than Notepad?? I have already gone to internet options and checked Word as the program to use, but the files still open with Notepad. Help. |

All of the OTR logs that have the ".log" extension are plain text, ASCII files. Notepad should "see" them correctly. In fact, some of them were written with Notepad! You might try this: 1. Right-click on the log file name, and download the xxx.log to your computer. 2. Use Windows Explorer to rename the xxx.log file to xxx.txt 3. Click on the xxx.txt file and see if you can read it.

Thanks, Mr Genco, for the suggestion. Notepad still didn't work after I had downloaded the file and renamed it, but by downloading the file, I now have the option of what to open the file with. Word '02 works like a charm with it.
Still haven't got a clue as to why notepad doesn't work on my new computer for this site. But at least now, I can read the logs. Bob |

| I have no solution for you but you might have more luck asking the question in www.help2go.com and they answer pretty quickly. You have to sign up as a member but it's free and they have helped me with several problems. They are just computer "geeks" who help each other. lol By the way... are you the Bob Watson that was in Boys Town????? |

You may find this solution cumbersome, but no moreso than downloading and converting each log one at a time:
Try installing the free browser Mozilla Firefox and getting a feel for it as a replacement for (or alternative to) Internet Explorer. It's based on the old Netscape model, but far more compact and stable. In addition to such handy built-in features as advertisement blocking, tabbed browsing and improved bookmark functionality, I find it displays .log files natively without a hitch. |

I was able to replicate your problem. It seems to affect only the files revised or uploaded in the last month or two. Apparently the carriage returns are disappearing. You see a little box, something like [] instead of a linefeed / carriage return. The problem is evident with Internet Explorer (as it feeds the .log file to Notepad, but it is absent with browsers that have internal text readers/displayers. The problem is also absent when the file is downloaded and/or viewed with an editor other than Notepad. The problem is absent when the original file is viewed with Notepad. I will try to determine if this is due to an upload error or a download error.

The problem seemed to be a translation of the file encoding. Although they were being uploaded as ANSI (PC) text tiles, they were being served as ANSI (UNIX) text files, and your PC did not see an expected end-of-line.
Problem fixed ... or at least avoided ... or worked around. Now, when you access the logs, they will be delivered to you as .txt files rather than .log files. What does that mean to YOU?
If things still don't work as expected, leave a note here. Lou
