Well, this is a longshot, but...

When I was a kid, I heard part of a radio progam and have wondered about what it was. I'm not sure of whether it was OTR or a new program(this was 1980). Here's what I rememember:

There was a creepy, "Raymond" type narrarator. In the show, the ghost of a gangster named "Handsome Johnny" or "Handsome Jimmy" had taken his wife as well as a young married couple captive somehow. I remember the wife in the young couple was expecting a child. At the end of the program, the gangster's ghost got the news that he had been "purged" (whatever that means).

That's all I remember. We were traveling and found the station right in the middle of the show. Then, we lost the signal before I could get the name of the show. I realize that's not much to go on, but it's haunted me for 24 years. ANY info would be appreciated

I am sure that show would have been Himan Brown's "CBS Radio Mystery Theater". The series ran from 1974 to 1982 and had E.G. Marshall as a narrator. The show started with a creaking door and end with the narrator saying "pleasant dreams everyone" and another creaking door closing.

If it was a NEW show in 1980 it almost certainly was CBSRMT, but, then as now, shows from the OTR era are rebroadcast. Clarence describes the narrator as "creepy". I wouldn't use that term to describe E.G. Marshall's style, but I suppose it's a matter of perception.

Hmmm, here's the thing..the first time I heard "Inner Sanctum", I thought that what I had heard was an episode of that show, the host sounded a lot like Raymond IIRC. One problem: the "mystery show" had an actual ghost. It's been my experience with Inner Sanctum that there's always an explanation for anything that appears to be supernatural. Also, there was a pregnant woman in the story. I'm trying to remember if they said she was "expecting" or "pregnant". If they said pregnant, we can probably rule out OTR.

I'm almost positive E.G. Marshall wasn't the narrator. But thenn again, this was 24 years ago...lol.

I REALLY wish that I could figure this out. When I heard this, we were driving from Kentucky to Indiana on a rainy night. The rain got so bad that we had to pull off onto the side of the road. As we sat there, we listened to this. The atmosphere and the fact that I was ten years old probably made this memory a lot better than it was in reality.

Sorry for rambling... :)

It was an episode of "CBS Radio Mystery Theatre" called "Medium Rare"; Robert Dryden played the ghost.

Well, I just looked it up. That episode was originally broadcast on 8/29/74, so what I heard had to be a rerun. I also heard a brief audio clip of the narrator and it sounds VERY familiar.

Thanks for your help. If I'm not mistaken, my question is now officially off topic! :)
