Although I have no details, I was informed today that the wonderful actress Mercedes McCambridge has passed away. She was on many radio programs, and with her unusual, whispery voice, will be remembered by many of us. Personally, I first remember hearing her in the I LOVE A MYSTERY episodes of "The Thing That Cries in the Night" when I was a child, listening under the covers, late at night when I was supposed to be sleeping, and very scared! She was also in films (the voice of the Exorcist) and on TV. She will be missed by many.

McCambridge died on March 2 in La Jolla, CA, although her death was not announced until March 17, by her trustee, Cathy Ruppert, who declined to explain the two week delay. McCambridge had been a virtual recluse for the past few years. Ruppert also disclosed the true birth date of McCambridge, who had always claimed 3-17-18 which would have made her 85 at her death. But she was actually born 3-16-16, making her 87, said Ruppert.

The passing of Miss McCambridge, the third OTR voice to pass away in a month, again makes us OTR fans very sad. Her portrail of "Defense Attorney" is what I best know her by. God bless you "Mercy"...

And don't forget her MANY appearances on CBS Radio Mystery Theater. Obviously she was one of Himan Brown's favorite actresses too

I enjoyed her appearances on: Inner Sanctum, Lights Out, Studio One, and Screen Director's Playhouse.
On TV I like her guest appearances on Rawhide and Gunsmoke playing a hillbillie type of woman. Last Time I saw her was at the Oscars when they paraded most of the living past winners out onto the stage. |

She was also the first heroine of the longest-running show in history, "The Guiding Light". I would love to hear her in that program. The character was so sweet it's hard
