I am a teenager, and after discussion with my grandparents about how interesting OTR was I got into the hobby. That was over 1 year ago and I am getting more and more interested as the months pass. I am very interested in "scary" horror OTR, and I was wondering what other fans think are the best horror series and where I can find them? I have listened to a few horror episodes but would like to see other people's opinions as well.

Well, welcome to the hobby of OTR...As a collector of 2300 shows,
there is a lot of shows to choose from. Here's my list: THE WHISTLER LIGHTS OUT INNER SANCTUM MYSTERIES WITCH'S TALE STRANGE AS IT SEEMS and the best OTR show ever produced...SUSPENSE!!! You can find many of these show online-try Radio Spirits.com (they're available for purchase there) or check with local old record shops in your area. Good luck and again welcome to the hobby of O.T.R. Ed Kienzler Springfield,Illinois |

I would add certain episodes of Quiet, Please to your list. These were very well written shows and the creator and writer of this series - Wyllis Cooper - was also the creator of the original "Lights Out."
One in particular is called "There Is Nothing Behind the Door." I can guarantee that if you listen to this in the dark, it will scare the heck out of you.

I would throw in a couple of ESCAPE episodes in with the others mentioned, like "Evening Primrose," "Three Skeleton Key," and "A Shipment of Mute Fate."

To me the "scariest" radio series has to be Quiet Please which aired approx. 1946-1948 on Mutual and ABC. Very close in story ideas and execution to the Twilight Zone.

I love O/NTR and some of the scariest OTR horror shows to me were featured on shows like Suspense, Lights Out, Escape, and The Whistler.
Just a thought:
Also check out www.yesterdayusa.com for OTR hobby information and www.bbc.co.uk/westway for a radio drama serial that is being produced today. Old and New Time Radio is a great and wonderful hobby. The people who are involved in it are also wonderful and help others really get into the hobby and the audio arts.

The Hall Of Fantasy had some spooky episodes, although some people don't like it much. You'd have to check out a few episodes and decide for yourself.
"The House In Cypress Canyon" and "The Hitchhiker" from Suspense along with "Three Skeleton Key" from Escape would be my favorite scary episodes. "The Hitchhiker" is best enjoyed in the car when driving late at night and "Cypress Canyon" is great for a rainy night.

I would reccomend two Canadian series from the 1980's, Vanishing Point and Nightfall. Both were a mixture of classic horror story adaptations and original scripts. Vanishing Point tended to be somewhat more eclectic than Nightfall, veering towards science fiction and fantasy. Nightfall was always straight horror. Radio Lady has at least Nightfall. I think Vanishing Point is available on ebay as well. Best Vanishing Point episodes, The Playground; How Love Came to Professor Guildea(note perfect adaptation of an extremely creepy Edwardian classic); A Small Good Thing (adapted from the Raymond Carver story-one of the ten best episodes of dramatic radio ever broadcast). Best Nightfall, two part original script The Blood Countess based on the life of all too real 17
