Hello--- I'm new to this message board. I represent the Al Capp estate. In my incarnation as Kitchen Sink Press (1969-99) I published nearly 30 books of LI'L ABNER (and many other classic comic strips). I am currently at work on a book about Capp's career. I understand that there was a short-lived "Li'l Abner" radio show in 1940, but have little information on it. Does anyone out there by chance have recordings or literature?
I am likewise interested in any recordings of cartoonist Al Capp himself, whether as a guest on radio, his brief fill-in for Drew Pearson, his March 2, 1948 "Town Meeting" debate, his later Monitor appearances and even later short syndicated opinion program. I welcome inquiries of all kinds and am happy to pay for copies of tapes, literature, etc.

NBC aired "Li'l Abner" Monday thru Friday at 6:45 PM (EST) from Nov 20, 1939 to Dec 6, 1940. It was a 15 minute show starring later-to-be Hollywood actor, John Hodiak, in title lead, and Chicago soap opera star, Laurette Fillbrandt, as Daisy Mae. His parents were played by Clarence Hartzell (who was also a prominent actor on "Vic and Sade") and Hazel Dopheide. Durwood Kirby was the announcer.

Only one audio copy has survived; most collectors, including myself, have it in their archives and some OTR dealers list it in their cataloges.

A great source of information, tapes, archives---little known--is the Library of Congress. They have their own site. They have a special section called Ask A Librarian, and you will get a reply.

the program you inquire about, "Town Meeting of the Air" (aka America's Town Meeting) was broadcast from 1935-1945 on NBC Blue and from 1945-1956 on the ABC Radio network (formerly NBC Blue). So the episode you ask about would have been on ABC in 1948, and I wish I had a copy of it,but maybe someone has it. Sorry this is the best I can help you with.
