What does it mean when you're listening to an old radio show and they say it was "transcribed" or was a "transcription"?

Sorry if that's a stupid question. I'm new to OTR.

Thanks!

I believe it means the show was previously recorded on discs (similiar to the old phonograph records, before being broadcast, rather than being live.
In the early days of network radio, most if not all, shows were done live. I think Bing Crosby was the first big star who prerecorded his shows when he moved to ABC.
Also a lot of radio programs that were not on networks were 'syndicated' to radio stations and were on discs (transcribed).

Actually, Crosby was the first to *tape* his shows. Many others before him recorded their shows to 'transcription discs', either to be broadcast at a later time or for the star's/network's archive. For example, syndicated shows would be recorded to disc then sent to the stations to be played during their scheduled time.

The earliest Jack Benny episodes (early 30's) were broadcast live, but Jack wanted to keep a copy, so they were transcribed to disk -- but when the singer came on the engineer stopped recording.

"Transription" was used for any recorded material, such as recorded commercials used during broadcasts. My father and his two brothers, the Landt Trio, made their living on "transcriptions" from the late 40's to the mid 50's after their "Sing Along with the Landt Trio" program was not renewed.

I know this because "transcriptions" was the term they would use (rather than "commercials") when discussing a contract for such work. The best remembered is their "Carpets from the looms of Mohawk", played as part of the Roberta Quinlan show on television, but the best financially was their "Activated Shell" transcription which was played nightly on the CBS Evening News with John Cameron Swayze. My father said that because that transcription was played within
