Can someone please explain to me why CBS was sometimes nicknamed The Tiffany Network? I believe it's a reference to its reputation for being the quality network, but I don't understand the reference. Thanks

CBS got that moniker not only because of the quality of their prigrams, but also because, I think, Mr. Paley wanted a sense os style and high quality in the operations of the company--from the company's surroundings to promotional materials, etc.

Thanks for the reply. But I still don't get it. How does the name Tiffany Network signify quality more than, say, the Laura Network or the Michael Network? To me, Tiffany is just a girl's name.

Dear Steve,
Let me try from a female perspective . . . TIFFANY'S was the epitome of great gems, jewels, silver, vases (I should say vaahzez). . . simply the highest in quality, with the wealthiest clientele. Thus, the name TIFFANY signifies "the best". Does this help? |

And for further understanding of the the Tiffany reference, I refer you to the old film "Breakfast at Tiffany's." It's a "top drawer" reference for merchandise.

Ah! I see. Thanks to both of you. As it happens, Breakfast At Tiffany's is one film I've never seen but would like to see. I did think that perhaps there was some connection there. Thanks again.

My sense is that CBS pushed its "Tiffany" image to such an extent that people began believing it after a while. I also think that the Tiffany reference has more to do with CBS television and especially its news division than OTR,--but I could be mistaken. When I was growing up I thought of NBC television as the classiest of the three networks, unaware that CBS was (supposedly) ranked higher.

Thanks for replying. But I still don't see why the name Tiffany was used. Was it purely because someone decided it was a nice name
