I'm a big fan of Jack Benny, but have not heard many of his earlier shows from the 1930s into the mid-1940s.
I would like to know how the movie actor Andy Devine became a part of the Jack Benny Program and how the whole Buck Benny thing got started and why. How long was Devine a part of the show? Was he a regular or semi-regular or occasional guest on the Benny radio show? |

Andy was a recurring character in the late 30's into early 40's. When he became mayor of (I think this was probably for real) Van Nuys, he'd hang around for the next half year or so. After that, only occasionally for the next year or so.
I don't know why or how he was part of the show other than it was a comedy and he was funny. Same with Buck Benny -- I suppose they probably thought it would be a funny bit, and it became popular with the listeners. |
