I am writing a book on the black actor and activist Canada Lee, who was blacklisted for his civil rights work and died of a heart attack, penniless, in 1952 at the age of 45. Lee did a significant amount of work on radio, including programs for "Destination Freedom," "New World A-Comin," and "Flow Gently, Sweet Rhythm."
I am trying to create a complete bibliography of Canada Lee's radio work for this book. I hope that old-time radio experts and collectors will give me a hand, e-mailing me any information you may have on any program Lee made. All help will be credited in the biography, to be published summer 2003. In addition, I am desperately trying to locate a copy of the Destination Freedom program that aired March 6, 1949 (according to your log). The title was "Do Something! Do Something!" and it is a profile of Canada. Please accept my advance thanks for any help you might be able to give me. Best regards, Mona Smith

Mona,
I'm not saying you're re-inventing the wheel, but most of what you've asked for was the subject of an inquiry for past three years by Howard Blue, in behalf of Lee's widow. Blue is the well-known author of recent book, "Words at War" (Scarecrow Press) which deals in great detail with the careers of Lee and similar actors, who were hurt by the Red-baiters of post WW II. You can contact Howard at khovard@juno.com if you wish. |
