Hello...This may be a long shot, but a gentleman I know is trying to find out if any radio broadcast recordings were ever made of singer Woody Guthrie, and then, specifically, if any such transcriptions survive today?
I believe this person is most interested in finding any possible recordings of Guthrie made in Los Angeles between 1937 and 1940, when he had a regular radio show on L.A. station KFVD, owned by J. Franke Burke. Any information on recordings of Guthrie on radio, Los Angeles or eleswhere, that survive today, would be most appreciated. Thank you. jh

Guthrie appeared in:
FORECAST 3/10/40 CBS. This was a preview of BACK WHERE I COME FROM a folk music program that subsequently appeared on CBS. None of the shows from the regular run survive and I don't know if Guthrie appeared in them. HOOTENANNY 8/19/47 CBS. This is the only show of the series. I don't know if it was actually broadcast or if it is an audition. He also appeared in Norman Corwin's V-E DAY program, ON A NOTE OF VICTORY. |

There's a three disc set of interviews with Woody by
Alan Lomax on the Library of Congress Recording series. Absolutely incredible stuff, including the genesis of Woody's song, So Long, It's Been Good to Know You. Woody's story telling skills are incomparable. I was able to get the CD set at my local Borders Book |
