Can a RA file be converted to MP3, and will it sound as good as a orginal MP3 encoded file?, If so how can I do this?

I'm not an expert on MP3 but yes you should be able to convert RA to MP3. Whether you can do this directly or by recording the RA file on tape then using the tape to create an MP3 I couldn't say.

You second question is easier to answer: Conerting your RA file to MP3 will not improve the sound quality of the RA original. You will get a faithful copy of the original complete with blemishes.

Perhaps if you submitted this question at Audiotools BBS you'd get an authoritative answer.

Yes there is a product that can convert RealAudio files to WAV. It's called RA2WAV. Once the file has been converted to WAV, it can then be encoded to MP3 format.

Today I was looking for a wav to mp3 converter and stumbled across something that might fit your needs. It's called Streambox Ripper, and it's supposed to convert RA directly to mp3. I can't vouch for its effectiveness, but you can find it at www.mysharewarepage.com/mp3.htm "Louie" Johnson

I believe streambox no longer supports conversion of REAL AUDIO unless you have older version (like I Do) and do not erase it. They got sued by REAL NETWORKS. There is stedious way to do it if you do not have 1 or two to do.

You can loading a recording program like COOLEDIT or Audiotools but instead of recording from your LINE IN, you set the recording to stereo mixer. Then start the recording in program. As fast as you can play the file with the real player. When its done playing, stop the recording in program you are recording with and save the file as mp3 or wave file. This works flawlessly. I found it works real easy w/ COOL EDIT since you can edit out any gaps.

Important- do not load anything that creates sound on you computer your recording will pick this up, including the WINDOWS sound events. Its best to disable all windows sound event
