Well, I have used both an FM transmitter and a device, which I use now and prefer from a company called Akoo (see link below). The device only cost me about $99 at the time and one hooks to my computer and the other sits either hooked via cables to a radio/stereo source, or via a "sympathetic" connection. I prefer the sympathetic connection as it is closer to what you seem to be looking for.

The device transmits on 900 mHz stereo encoded. I just set the receiver unit in one room of the house and all of my radios when tuned to correct channel (88.3 or 88.1) can receive the signal and very well! I even have been able to hear it in my car up to a short distance as I travel away (they have a portable car/mp3 player transmitter too).

I see at their web site, it is currently on sale for $69.00. I am fully satisfied with it. We tune in BBC on the Internet and listen
