In preparation for a biography of Victor Fleming, the motion picture director, I'm looking for any radio programs on which he might have appeared, or on which any of his movies were dramatized.

This is no easy appeal, I know. Fleming was about as far from Cecil B. DeMille as they got, and was not given to personal promotion of any kind.

This is what I have so far: A copy of the script for the April 21, 1938 Maxwell House "Good News" program, on which a scene from Fleming's "Test Pilot" was re-enacted. And I know that "Test Pilot" was dramatized in 1942 on the Lux Radio Theater. What I don't know is whether Fleming himself appeared on the Lux program.

I'm looking to see if Fleming made any radio appearances in promotion of his 1948 production of "Joan of Arc," or for "The Wizard of Oz" and "Gone With The Wind," both in 1939, of course. Other possibilities are promotional appearances for "Tortilla Flat" in 1942 and "Adventure" in 1945.

Yes, I know all this is a long shot! But I also know that this is the place to ask.

Many thanks for anything anyone can offer.

J. David Goldin has an "Artist Index" of his vast OTR collection at http://www.radiogoldindex.com/frame1.html. This listing indicates one appearance of Victor Fleming. Unfortunately, the index isn't finished yet, so you can't tell what the program is, but I assume Goldin would respond to an e-mail inquiry. This doesn't necessarily mean that he has a program on which Fleming appears, it could simply be the program you have a script for or something else that refers to Fleming. On the other hand it is just his collection that is indexed, so there could be other appearances by Fleming. Good luck.

Kurt,

Here are a couple of possible sources of information:

Lux Presents Hollywood - A Show-by-Show History of the Lux Radio Theatre and the Lux Video Theatre, 1934–1957 by Connie Billips and Arthur Pierce

ISBN: 0-89950-938-X 739pp. 83 photographs, references, appendix, bibliography, index $95 library binding 1995 published by McFarland & Co. Inc.

http://www.mcfarlandpub.com/action.lasso?-db=Promodat.fp3&-lay=Viewing%20Layout&-format=record%5fdetail.htm&-recid=88&-find

The other source is an OTR show dealer, Jerry Haendiges, who has an extensive Old-Time Show library including many episodes of Lux Radio Theater. He also has a complete broadcast log for Lux and several shows of its type:

http://www.otrsite.com/logs/logl1008.htm

The following Victor Fleming movies that you list were aired on Lux and can be purchased through Jerry:

"Test Pilot" 05-25-42

"The Wizard of Oz" 12-25-50

Other radio series may have aired re-creations of Fleming's movies. Look at the following for other series such as The Screen Guild Theater and Screen Director's Playhouse

Hope these help,

Ste
