I'd like to hear from anyone who has information on children's shows that aired on Hartford CT radio stations from the 30's to the 50's.
WDRC had a program with Sterling V. Couch, whom my mother remembers as "Daddy Couch". He was the station's educational director. WTIC had Carnival Junior Legion, probably in the 40's, hosted by Gene and Glenn (the same team as "Gene and Glenn and Jake and Lena"). WTHT had a show in the late 40's - early 50's with Joe Girand. Any information is greatly appreciated. Macandrew |

Sorry not to have your specific request, but I have difficulty finding anything regarding children's programs period. I just ordered a book from out library specifically about this type of programming. I will send you the title and info when it comes in; I can't remember offhand what it is titled.

Joe Girand was my great uncle. I know that he did do a children's program which he wrote songs about drinking milk. I have an article about him from a newspaper that says, "We had a children's show, a Man-in-the-Street interview program, record shows and sports. Lots of people still remember the 'chug-a-lug' club of milk drinkers we organized on the children's show and the milk-drinking song I wrote and recorded for Columbia". - The Hartford Times, Saturday, November 26, 1966.
I came across your site because I am trying to find out more information about my uncle. He was my Grandfather's brother. My Grandfather's name was Salvatore Girandola, and Joe Girand's real last name was Girandola, but it was shortened to Girand so it would be easier for radio. If you or anyone can get me information, that would be great! Thank |
