Can anyone give me a rundown of the show The Couple Next Door. When was it on...what was the genre...who were the regulars? Thanks.

There were 2 different verisons of THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR. The first version was heard in 1937 (not sure of the exact date it debuted or ended) on the Mutual Network for Oxydol. The program starred Olan Soule and Elinior Harriott as Tom and Dorothy Wright, and Harold Vermilyea and Lillian Gish as Sam and Lulu Jones. From what I gathered, the story concerned Tom and Dorothy Wright, who were newlyweds. Although their house was in the suburbs, Dorothy was determined to start a farm--- complete with chickens, cows, and other assorted farm animals. The "barn" where the aninals were kept was the garage. In helping Dorothy, Sam and Lulu Jones were hired hands.

The second format of THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR was on CBS Radio from December 30, 1957-November 25, 1960 (the final day for radio serials). The sponsors consisted of Brisk Tooth Paste, Mentholatum Deep Heat Rub, Mentholatum Cold Ban Cold Tablets, Arrid, Carter's Little Liver Pills, Glamorene Liquid Upholstery Cleaner, Beech Nut Baby Food, and other assorted products under the "MULTI SPONSORS" listing.

It starred Peg Lynch and Alan Bunce as Mr. & Mrs. Piper (don't have a clue what their first names were), with Francie Myers as their daughter Betsy and Margaret Hamilton as Aunt Effie. This program focused on the Piper family who wanted to lead normal, uneventful lives. Unfortunately, small routine matters led to some major problems.

Both formats were guaranteed to tickle the listeners' funny bones.

According to the Enyclopedia of Old-Time Radio by John Dunning, the program ran on WGN in Chicago from 1935-37 and the Mutual Network in the summer of 1937. Starred Olan Soule and Elinor Harriot as Tom and Dorothy Wright. Sponsored by Holland Furnace Company on WGN and Proctor and Gamble on Mutual. Theme song was "Love Nest," used later by Burns and Allen.

There was a CBS revival in 1957-1960, with Peg Lynch and Alan Bunce playing an unnamed couple (they referred to each other as "dear").

Had not heard of that show before your note, but Dunning's Encycl
