I have been asked to participate in a special tribute to veterans, on Flag Day, June 14th, 2001. Having worked with ventriloquism, I will try to put together a skit based upon Edgar Bergan, Charlie MacCarthy and Mortimer Snerd, and the USO shows from World War II.
Would you have any resources that might help me prepare for this event? I am not being paid for my involvement, but am willing to pay for the help you might be able to give. The event will occur in Delaware, Ohio, on Flag Day, June 14th, 2001. My sister has been visiting nursing homes to encourage the residents for almost 5 years now, and as she heard the stories of WWII veterans, she began to plan a special day to show appreciation, honor and respect for them. What began as an outreach to a small gathering of individuals has blossomed into an event that may involve over 700 people and some of the top military & government officials of the United States. The format will be a recreation of a WWII USO show, of which Edgar Bergan was part of originally. What will be helpful for me to have, are the 'gag' lines that Edgar used with Charlie MacCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. They don't need to be from any particular show (actually, I would prefer taking the best gag lines from different shows, and then weave them into a "dialogue" that fits the Flag Day/Veterans Appreciation event). Any of Edgar Bergan's radio shows should work well, for me to listen to and select various dialogues with Charlie and Mortimer. My hope is that the veterans will remember some of the traditional gag lines, and that the memories will encourage them to realize that people still care about them, and appreciate the sacrifice that was made by their generation, so that our generation could still live in a "land of the free". And also, as they are at the threshold of entering eternity, I hope they will seriously consider the message that the Military Chaplain shares with them. I will develop a website that highlights how the day went, in order to share the results with those who shared their resources of time, knowledge and historical treasures.
