Hello. I'm new to this stuff and am doing some research for a professor. He's asked me to find some "inside" information about the Okeh Laughing Record (i.e. who is it on the recording, etc). I've looked around and thought that this forum would be a nice place to start. Any suggestions for places to look or any information on this subject would be helpful. Thanks!

I suspect the record was made in Europe. I've seen and heard copies of this record -- and its sequels -- with foreign titles.

Thanks for the response, Ted. I think you're right about the recording being European (Germany, I think). Any ideas about the circumstances surrounding the recording? Do we even know who it is on the recording?

I may be way off base, but are you sure you're not referring to "The Jones Laughing Record", recorded on RCA Victor by Spike Jones' City Slickers in the late 40's. It began as a trombone solo of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee", accompanied by piano. Early on, the trombonist hit a couple of klinkers, which set off the "bystanders" (George Rock, Freddie Morgan, Del Porter, et al.) into ever-mounting gales of laughter. Several efforts of the soloist to recuperate simply resulted in more egregious errors, thereby prolonging the hilarity. If this is the one you are thinking of, it is still available on one of the Jones anthology records through Amazon. If I am off-track here, please excuse.

Actually, Spike's 1946 record is a parody (more of a copy, really!) of the 1923 "Okeh Laughing Record" from Okeh Records. I believe the 1923 version has also been reissued on comedy compilation CDs.

"The Okeh Laughing Record" was also the basis of "Sh-h-h-h-h," a 1955 Walter Lantz/Universal cartoon directed by Tex Avery. The recording can be heard on the cartoon's soundtrack.
