McBride (1899-1976) was born and raised in Missouri and after some college, began working as a newspaper reporter in the 20s. By 1934 she was on radio, using a new name of "Martha Dean", on WOR. By 1937 she had taken her show, largely an interview variety program for women, to CBS where she reverted back to her real name. A folksy, freindly lady, she lured the great and near-great to her microphone for extensive interviews. In 1941 she moved to NBC, staying there until she moved to ABC in 1950. The United Nations named her the most important lady in the U.S. in the 50s and she once packed Madison Square Garden with fans for a special tribute to her. With over 20 years on national radio, and twelve books to her credit, including two autobiographies, "Long Way from Missouri" (1959) and "Out of the Air" (1960), she is almost forgotten today, except for the OTR community fans.

Jack is right. She was quite the radio interviewer. I remember her interviewing VP Barkley in about 1949, I think. That was uite a show. She interviewed a lot of movie stars including Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, etc.
I do not think my Grandmotehr ever missed one of her programs. |
