Most syndicated shows on transcription discs would be paired with Part 1 of Show A with Part 1 of Show B. Parts 2 of Shows A and B would be on another disc, so the stations could "segue" -- that is, as one ended, they could start the second half on their other turntable. But AFRS discs are always pressed with the SAME show, back to back on the same disc. How did the AFRS stations manage to play a half-hour show non-stop?

My understanding is that AFRS shortwave stations were sent two copies of each disk. This allowed them to segue from part to part. In addition, since these disks were being "bicycled" from piller to post, the double-disk policy allowed them to play the least worn side of each disk.

Of course, after a few months in circulation, it would be difficult to determine which side was in better shape since both of them would be pretty shot.

Now, a question of my own: I frequently find AFRS disks with domestic radio station call letters either stamped or written on the labels. This would seem to indicate that some radio stations had access to these recordings, though my understanding has always been that they were made exclusively for military use. Any ideas on this?
