| I cannot find Alexander Woollcott's CBS broadcast called "The Town Crier" which ran off and on throughout the 1930's. It seems like everything else is available, but I have not seen this show listed anywhere. Can anybody help? |

There are not many to find. The show was on the air (off and on) from Sep 1930 to Jan 1938. It was always done live, but two shows (probably airchecks) are in circulation now, including one dated 10-6-33. In view of the scarcity and lack of demand for this series, no dealer is going to put it in his catalog. You'll just have to keep searching, including contacting all the OTR dealers, many of whom are not on-line, and other radio archives.

Oops! Suddenly went blank there! As I was saying...
I've always thought it rather odd that so few of Woollcott's broadcasts survived, especially since he was known to have had many of them recorded for his own post-broadcast critique. I'll have to check and find out where his papers ended up after his death; perhaps some recordings found their way there as well. There are, of course, some "Information Please" programs extant in which he fills the fourth chair. Woollcott's florid and dramatic style, which is slightly reminiscent of Truman Capote, is undeniably dated today. Still, one cannot deny his power, demand, popularity, or success in his heyday. In browsing old issues of "Radio Guide," one is hard pressed to find any special big-name-cast program broadcast between 1933 and 1937 which doesn't feature him as either host or featured guest. On radio, at least, his name seems to have been synonomous with literary culture. Harlan Zinck First Generation Radio Archives

THE TOWN CRIER was on the air from 1930-1938.
1930-1931 Columbia Network Monday & Friday @ 7:15 PM for Gruen Watches Briefly in 1933 Columbia Wedensday & Friday @ 9:15 PM 1933-1934 Columbia Tuesday & Friday @ 9:15 PM 1934-1935 Columbia Sunday @ 7:00 PM for Cream Of Wheat (this broadcast was known as THE CREAM OF WHEAT PROGRAM) 1936-1937 Columbia Tuesday & Thursday @ 7:30 PM for Granger Pipe Tobacco The only ratings this program had was a 4.7 Hooper Ratings in 1936-1937. I have a 1933 sustaining broadcast of this program. Unfortunately, the audio isn't the best in the world, but it can be understood what was said or sung on the air. If you're interested, let me know.
