I'm wondering if anyone out there knows about a song called "I Love You (Three Little Tones)", which seems to be based on the three notes of the NBC chimes. The tune lasts for 2:06 and seems to have been recorded in the 1930s. It's a corny little ditty, done in a Big Band/Swing style. Maybe it was done for the NBC network as a promo, a filler, or for a specific show? (Someone at NBC-TV's Saturday Night Live TV show found this song, as it was done on Saturday Night Live in 1978!)
A recording of this song turned up this week on the website reelradio.com, or www.airchecks.com This site usually features airchecks of Top-40 radio stations and their DJs from various U.S. cities from the 1950s through the '80s. They usually don't feature recordings from OTR days! This song, apparently from NBC, an NBC show or an NBC affiliate, was found recorded onto a broadcast cart in the early 1980s inside the NBC Radio newsroom in Washington, D.C....However, there was no clue as to what year it was recorded, who sang it, where it was recorded and why. The man who found this recording has also passed it on to Bill Harris' website on the history of the NBC chimes. If anyone has any hunches or documentation as to the origin of this song, who may have sang it and why, I'd sure like to know and unravel this mystery. Was it for a specific network show or for NBC to use as a promo or filler? Was the tenor simply a staff NBC singer? I'd appreciate any and all answers to this question. Thanks. |

Your song came much later. I recall a wonderful version of the NBC Chimes that was used in the 50's and into the early 60's as music for NBC radio and TV show promos. It was a nice slick full orchestral version. It was played as filler music on NBC's "Monitor" radio show.
Again, an excellent bit of promo music writing and orchestral arrangement. AND another version of it remains today. A march version is used for NBC Sports programs. You hear it at the start and finsh and sometimes on the breaks of NBC TV sprots shows. I have never written to NBC inquiring about the music. Again, if you tune in NBC Sports shows on TV, you will hear a march version of this NBC Chimes song. Just image what it would sound like as an uptemp instrumental -- and you will know what THAT sounded like! Jim Stokes |

Testing. My lengthy message about the NBC Chimes promo music NEVER was posted. What goes on here?
If you are really serious about knowing about promo music based on the NBC Chimes, then e-mail me. But don't play games with having people write lengthy messages and then not have them recorded! |

Whoops. The system DOES WORK. I didn't see it when I first posted it though.
