I am trying to find a recording of J'attendrai. The recording I am looking for was played at the end of a radio show in the 1940's. It is a song my father and mother used to listen to together when they were dating. My mother has since passed away and now my father is in poor health and would like to hear this again. He thinks the artist's last name was Hildegard?? I have not been able to find any recording by this artist. Can you help me?

I'm not familiar with this song, Cathy, but the singer's last name is not "Hildegarde"; that's her first, and only, stage name. Although she was billed on radio and in night clubs as European, she was just a little gal, (Lorreta Sell) who was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI. Later, her agent, Anna Sosenko, got her to learn songs in French, Italian, and German and toasted her as "The Incomparable Hildegarde." Her radio theme song was "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup", which may be the one your dad recalls. She was on many radio shows, including her own, "Hildegarde's Raleigh Room" (44-46) and had a very active recording career. She may still be alive but I'm not sure. She did attend the Newark FOTR Convention about 4 years ago. Many of her old songs have been re-released on CDs; check with any good music store.

Cathy,

I just checked at www.cdconnection.com and that site has two CDs by the Incomparable Hildegarde for sale. I don't see the exact title your father gave you in any of the umpteen songs recorded on these two CDs. However, one of them has her theme song, and I suspect that's the one your dad meant.

I searched for "J'attendrai" at gracenote.com and found over 100 CDs, all of them by French artists, including compilations of hits from the 1930s. The 30s versions seem to be by Tino Rossi and Rina Ketty.

Sorry, there was no match with Hildegarde. There seems to be little available by her on CD and she could easily have recorded the song.

I tried downloading the song at Napster but got only part of the Rossi version. However, I did find a satisfying female rendition by a Lucienne Delyle which I downloaded completely. It's the same as the song Rossi sings. Did Hildegarde sing it entirely in French? The song begins "J'attendrai, la jour et la nuit. J'attendrai toujours, ton retour."

I'll hang on to this for a while. Contact
