Anybody recall a radio program in the late 40's called POOL'S PARADISE? Unsure of the spelling of "pool." But the show was hosted by namesake John Pool (or Poole?) He had a show in the genre of Jean Shepard. His theme was a big lush orchestra version of the song "Paradise." And he would sing the lyrics and go "dah, dah, dah," which were part of the lyrics. If you are not familiar with the song, the lyrics go something like --
"And then she holds my hand, dah, dah, dah, it's Paradise!" (etc) Very funny show. Like Jean Shepard's seemingly stream-of- consciousness monologues. He had a schtick he always worked in when he talked himself into a corner or he felt the topic had run dry. He'd go into a "Hoover Dam" type of travelogue. Then he'd get out of it and go to another topic. Anybody know about this show? I think it was on ABC Radio. Jim Stokes |

Yeah--funny Mutual 1948-1950 afternoon-daytime show.... I believe...when nets were cancelling many regular programs that ran for many years...somewhere in my tapes buried away, I have an air-check..funny stuff...he would play a woman's comment--or a man's comment...or saying that had nothing to do with what was going on..and it would seem the voice out of contex..was indeed commenting on what Poole was saying. He had a dj type show and would play Sinatra,Arthur Godfrey records, songs,etc...always keeping the format light and breezy and laughing and joking. Nothing serious. There are said to be a couple complete shows in circulation. Hickerson has it listed as 15-mins..but they were longer running afternoon shows I listened to. I always wondered why such a lite-fluffy DJ show as his was on a network.

J Cooper. You got a better memory than me. But my memory is coming back now. Yep, it was on Mutual. KSDN had Mutual. Then went to ABC later, as I recall. Poole's show also reminded me of Wally Phillips afternoon drive show on WGN, Chicago. He had nonsequitor drop-ins on his show. I would love to hear a dub of Poole's show. e-mail me about it, okay?

My recall on this is that it was a late-night show (11 or Midnight, CST) on WWL, "from the Roosevelt Hotel, New Orleans." I listened in the late 40's, and recall that after cracking some hilariously corny joke, there would be the sound of a rifle shot riccochete (sp?). He also inserted segments of an old 78 rpm Daffy Duck kids' album, such as the usual Daffy "Hoo Hoo Hoo", the singing of "This Is The Way We Wash Our Clothes . . . " backward (i.e., "Clothes Our Wash We Way The Is This . . ."). A marvelously silly, inventive, totally entertaining production. At the time, a tea-time violinist named Alfred Kurst was appearing with his small string group in the formal dining room of the Roosevelt Hotel, and Poole was required to read a brief commercial on each program; naturally, he always tagged the name Kurst with a recording of some dude swearing, though innocuously garbled.

Don, later on I recall Moonglow With Martin On WWL as an all-night show. Had lots of the more pop jazz of the time.

I do remember the show, although I did not listen regularly. WWL had a tremendous late-night signal into the midwest and Mississippi valley area in those wonderful days.

Yes. BTW, what the heck has happened to AM DX at night? Maybe the current radios have a weak front end for receiving long distance signals. I do know that the most mediocre tube type kitchen radio back in the 50s and 60s could pull in TONS of AM stations at night! Are curr
