Many new OTR fans are collecting their materials via MP3 files rather than the traditional reel or cassette tape. Until recently, these MP3 files could be played only on computers. Now, in addition to computers, there are RAM-based, hard drive-based and CD-ROM based MP3 players.
This page is an attempt to summarize information on suitability of CD-ROM based MP3 players for OTR use. If you are interested, check it out. If you have more information about CD-based MP3 players, either add it as a reply to this post, or send an email to the webmaster. Lou |

Well, I am planning to get a CD burner so I can make my own MP3's from my various tape sources. So......since I can't seem to find my answer in the FAQ section, I will ask here. About how much material will I get, timewise, on one CD, if I use a 32 bit rate??? 10 hours? 15 hours? Or more??? Can I buy a lower speed CD burner (6x4x4), using the burner to make the CD's and my regular DVD-ROM player to play the CD's?
Thanks, Bob |

At 32 Kbps / 22 KHz mono, a half-hour OTR show takes about 7 megabytes of space. There are about 640 meg on a CD. That means you can get about 91 shows (45 hours) on a single CD. Can I buy a lower speed CD burner (6x4x4), using the burner to make the CD's and my regular DVD-ROM player to play the CD's? Many authorities suggest using a low-speed burn for the material you wish to keep for any length of time. High speed burns &/or cheap blanks may cause problems. Otherwise, burn speed and playback are independent. I don't know if your player will accept the CDs, however. Check the documentation to see if it will play 32Kbps/22KHz MP3s (the primary purpose of this thread is to find out which MP3 players accept these encode parameters). Lou |

45 hours??!!!??? Wow!!!! I don't have a very large collection. I could probably get all of mine on a CD or maybe two.
Thanks for mentioning to check to see if my DVD-ROM drive could play the CD's. I hadn't even thought of that. I used to download some MP3's from various OTR sites onto Superdisk's and played them through my RealPlayer. I assumed that I would be able to do the same with any CD's I created. I'll have to check on that. Thanks again, Bob |

Lou, in looking over your information on the main BBS, you had the Genica/Tavaura MP3 player with a question mark for the price. It is normally $99, but Geeks.com has a special on right now so it's $89. Theres a perk you may purchase at the same time for $9.99, which includes 8 80:00 CDR's, a zipper case, jacks for the car (both cigarette lighter and cassette player inserts), and perhaps more stuff, I believe gold bud earphones was another, but I'm not sure. These MP3 players vary with memory, but this one does play OTR. Might be worth checking it out.

Hello, Anyone out there that has a Philips Expanium MP3 Cd player? I have had this unit for about two months and had mixed success. My problem is I occassionally play a cd w/ OTR and the unit will have problem with a few files. Basically, what it does is it plays the the show part of the way through and then stops and won't play anything else until I reset power. It only does this occassionally with certain shows. I been in touch with the company and all they could suggest is by burning process. I have ensured that all my mp3 files are in the form of 32 kbps, 22050 sample freq, Mono via STREAMBOX RIPPER software. It only does with certain shows. For example, I recently, got 4 CDs of Sherlock Holmes in a trade. I copied the files off these cds and reburned onto a new cds. I've experienced no problem playing these in the EXPANIUM. I use Adaptec 3.5 EZ-Cd Creator and tried every concenviable way to burn a data cd. I got another CD with 50 episodes of Dimension X that exhibits the problem I described above with some. I even takes these 50 shows from the original data cd (that play fine on the computer) decoded them back into wave files, then re encoded in new mp3 files and reburned them and still experience same problems while my sherlock holmes cds expereince no problem such as stopping or aborting midway through.I am not using DIRECT CD and burning w/ ez.
Another curious point is that if you replay the show that aborts, it tends to reabort in virtually tthe same point in the show as before down to the minute. Any help would be appreciated Mike Kerezman Anyone with this MP3 CD player out there |
