I have vague memories of listening as a youngster to a show which featured a musical (???) group called the Hoosier Hotshots, a Spike-Jones-ish band which featured one member named Hezzie (Are you ready Hezzie?). Anyone remember such a show?

The Hoosier Hotshots never had their own program, but were featured on "National Barn Dance" and "Uncle Ezra." This novelty quartet consisted of Paul "Hezzie" Trietsch, on washboard (also claxton and bulb horn), his brother, Ken, on guitar, and then Gabe Ward on clarinet with Frank Ketterman on base fiddle.

They were part of some grade-B western movies and short subjects so you may have seen them on the silver screen also.

Some, if not all the members of The Hoosier Hotshots, played in the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, according to a symphony orchesta friend of mine. I recall seeing the Hotshots play in what were called "short subjects" in my youth. Those were the short films that ran before the main feature. I must say they looked a bit too sophisticated to be real hillbillies.

Sony Music has issued a CD of two dozen or so of the original Columbia 78rpm recordings made in the 1930s and 40s by the Hoosier Hot Shots. They are very good, but after a while the slide whistle starts to become a bit much!

I'm sure anyone within night time range of WLS-Chicago's 50,000 watt signal in the '30s and '40s heard the Hoosier Hot Shots regularly on The National Barn Dance...I know my dad growing up in rural Wisconsin, told me his family always tuned into WLS for this program and they loved the Hot Shots; infact this show for them was more popular than WSM's Grand Ole Opry out of Nashville.

Jack mentioned that the Hoosier Hot Shots did not have their own show, but actually they did. According to Jay Hickerson's Ultimate History they had their own show 1950-1951 & I do have one of those shows from 10/7/50 that was on Mutual.
