I saw this question on another message board and it got me to wondering.
Was Kitty Russell ever refered to in the radio version of Gunsmoke as being the owner of the Long Branch Saloon?? And if so, what episode did she take up the ownership of the saloon?? Most of the episodes I have heard are from the shows early years where she is refered to as a "saloon girl" which, I guess was a nice way to put it. |

Darned if I know. But ownership is better than rental, in her profession.

| I cant remember if I ever heard that she owned it outright, however I remember for sure that she owned half of it in partnership with Sam. There was one episode when two gangsters tried to force a sale, but the sale did not go through. |

The Episode is called "NO SALE" (circa 1956) I not sure of exact date. Kitty and Sam own the LongBranch together because Sam canot sell it without Kitty's go ahead.

Very, very interesting. I went to my GUNSMOKE book and found that the episode was the last one of the 55-56 season on radio. I find it interesting that there is no TV version listed in the book for this episode. I had always assumed that if the radio version did refer to Kitty as a co owner, that the episode was probably based on a TV episode. I am defintely in the wrong there. I wonder if this is the first time that Kitty is referred to as a co owner of the LongBranch on radio? Is there an episode, on the radio version, that depicts Sam and Kitty taking up co ownership??? I definitely remember a TV episode where Sam and Kitty announce they are now the co owners of the LongBranch. Which brings to mind another question??? Did having Kitty become a businesswoman take some of the edge, and maybe for some of us the enjoyment of the series, off of GUNSMOKE?
Thanks, Bob |

I posted that message about Kitty on the other message board and just remember something. I haven't heard this episode in awhile so I may be wrong. In "Daddy O" Kitty and Sam(Or maybe it was Clem) buy a saloon. Kitty's dad comes to Dodge. The Dad tries to get Kitty to sell her half of the saloon but he wants to run off with the money.
Does this ring any bells with anyone?

I have a few Gunsmoke shows, and that is one of them! A swindler comes to town. I think he hints at marriage to Miss Kitty. Matt is suspicous and checks the guy out. Sure enough, he is a swindler.

| Hhhhmmmm. I've listened to a few Gunsmoke radio programs, but have never heard 'The Longbranch' mentioned. The two saloons that are mentioned are 'The Texas Trail' and the 'Alaferganza' (I'm sure I've misspelled the second one). I thought Kitty worked at The Texas Trail. Perhaps I just haven't gotten to the programs yet that do mention The Longbranch. |
