Looking for anything to do with the "Barn Dance" that was on WLS/WGN radio 1931- 1939. My grandfather, Lester "Mac" McFarland of "Mac and Bob" was on this show and I never got to know him before he died. Looking for any audio, or photos? anything really.

Lynn,

"Mac and Bob" were popular on WLS even after 1939. Their photographs appear in the 1941 WLS Annual Family Album. In the accompanying text, they are described as two musicians who:

"....met each other 23 years ago while studying at the Kentucky School for the blind. Mac plays piano, cornet, trombone, guitar and mandolin, while Bob has perfect pitch. These two friends teamed up as a harmony duo about 17 years ago and have been playing and singing together ever since."

In his photo, Lester McFarland is posed with his family: wife Ruby, sons Kenneth, age 8, and Larry, age 3, and daughter, Carol Gay, six months old.

Bob's full name was Robert Gardner and in his photo, he appears with his wife, listening to the radio.

Your grandfather and his partner were among my favorites on the WLS National Barndance. I particularly liked their rendition of "Leave A Light In The Window Tonight." The Barn Dance crew would come to the Orpheum Theater in my small town (Galesburg, IL) every year, and I saw them on the stage many, many times. They truly were a fine act, and much loved by NBD fans. Good lu
