I know something about organ music in radio shows, but I am looking for someone who can point to the shows with the most prominent organ music. Originally, a studio pipe organ (theatre pipe organ) was the source of organ music. The Hammond came into play in 1935, but many studios still had pipe organs. I played a Kilgen organ at WHAS in the 1960's, and I visited the WGN television studio and heard the Wurlitzer/Kimball. I noticed that an episode of Gunsmoke has an organ accompaniment in the early 50's, while most other Gunsmoke shows from this period had an orchestra. I have an old tape of Eddie Dunsteader and I believe he played radio as well as Rosa Rio. Looking for information...

Nearly every soap opera had an organist, as did most of the kids' adventure shows as well as a large portion of the mystery and detective shows.
Rosa Rio played for several soaps: Front Page Farrell, Lorenzo Jones, When a Girl Marries, My True Story and Myrt & Marge. She also played for Between the Bookends, The Shadow, and Cavalcade of America. Other soap opera organists were: Paul Carson (One Man's Family) Milton Charles (Bachelor's Children) Chester Kingbury (Hilltop House) Charles Paul (Road of Life and This is Nora Drake) and Doc Whipple (Ma Perkins) Other organists: Sybil Bock (Lum & Abner) John Duffy (Lassie) Henry Sylvern (Nick Carter and Philo Vance) Harold Turner (Tom Mix Straight Shooters) and George Wright (Archie Andrews) One of the more complete listings of OTR organists is found in Ron Lackman's 1996 book, "Same Time, Same Station". |
