Anyone remember "Arbogast," a radio show out of Chicago in the 40s and 50s? It was late nite (11:15 pm or so) and my recollections are that it was a kind of nutty, low key talk show between a couple of regulars (somebody named Arbogast being one of them) who just jabbered away for an hour or so and, I think, maybe played some records. I remember listening to them in high school and college when studying late at night, but still don't have a real clear memory of the show like I do of most other OTR stuff I listened to back then.

Derned if I know. There was or is the announcer Bob Arbogast, who did voices on some of the Stan Frieberg records and the cartoon shows. :)

Jim That's right, his first name was Bob, now that you mention it. On the show I'm thinking of, though, he was the host rather than the announcer and I'm sure the title of the show was "Arbogast". I can't think of why I would remember a name like that if it wasn't connected to the name of the show. Thanks for the input.

Bob Arbogast was a very very funny man. A tape of his mangled commercial was presented recently as a part of the WMAQ retrospective done by the very fine Bob Roberts. Those tapes are now part of the Museum of Broadcast Communication in Chicago, I understand. This retrospective was done when WMAQ was destroyed by its owner August 1.I remember Arbogast as a genius but don't know what happened to him after Chicago.

I have two records featuring comedy with Arbogast:

"Chaos" by Arbogast and Ross (Liberty 45 rpm) - a hilarious parody of Top 40 radio.

An LP for Dot, "Arbogast and (Dick) Whittinghill at Carnegie Hall." 10 or 15 Bob-and-Ray-type sketches, with sound effects. Funny stuff here!

I also have a tape from Los Angeles radio station KMPC, circa 1960, with Dick Whittinghill and PROBABLY Bob Arbogast - a three minute parody of a Russian bread commercial. ("Only the purest sawdust is used, of course.")

I remember "CHAOS," a parody on a top 40 radio station. The number one song and all other songs were "Oh Donna. Oh Donna. Oh Donna. OH!" And, "I see by the old clock on the wall, there's a dead fly!" "The news is brought to you by Jack's Grinding Wheel Company!" :)

I was a college radio dj at that time and recall playing that very funny record!

Thanks, everyone, for your responses. I now know that I just didn't imagine the program.

Boy, am I sllooowwww! Only just discovered this great site!? Anyway, Bob Arbogast broadcast his Arbogast show weeknights on WMAQ in about the 1951-3 period. One sound effect he used (in late '51, anyway) was a car crash. His partner was "Pete(r)". Contact Chuck Schade
