| Does anyone have any idea where I might find these old radio shows on cassette? I am not exactly sure of the title.....but it was the saga and adventures of Sgt. Preston and he was a Royal Canadian Mounty. Thank you to anyone with some advise for where to look or any help at all! |

This series was originally called "Challenge of the Yukon" when it went on the air 2/3/38 from WXYZ in Detroit (who also produced "The Lone Ranger" and "The Green Hornet".
Its origninal title prevailed until November 1951 when it was changed to "Sergeant Preston of the Yukon", which every kid listener had been calling it anyway. It aired until 6-9-55 on radio and then continued on TV. Hundreds of episodes of the radio version are available, and most of the merchants advertising on this site (See "A Word From Our Sponsor") will have umpteen copies for sale. Incidentally, since this was a kids' show, your inquiry actually belongs on the Juvenile BBS....and our Webmaster may move it there before you can say: "On, King, On, you huskies." Valerie --
I would try Radio Spirits. Look for them on the internet under "Old Radio Shows" search. Sgt Preston of the Yukon was a great old radio show. It was produced in Detroit at WXYZ by the same folks who gave us The Lone Ranger. Jim. |

| Quaker Puffed Wheat and Quaker Puffed Rice - On King, on you huskies - I can remember Sgt. Preston calling to his faithful lead dog companion and then the rush of the cold howling Yukon air and the catchy theme music. What a great program and yes, there are lots of adventures captured on tape, thank goodness. |

Hope I am not being redundant. (I love to read more of the same myself--everybody has a different angle!) Anyway, the theme of the Sgt Preston of the Yukon show is the Overture to Dona Diana by Rezniceck. That may be misspelled. But close. One of my favorite versions is an oldie -- Boston Pops, conducted by Arthur Fiedler, on RCA records. It sounds very much like the version played on Sgt Preston. Careful when you buy a recording of this. There are some very slow tempo versions. ick. So listen before you buy! Actually, there was another theme used on Sgt. Preston. Just a short orchestral fanfare. I don't know if that was the first version of the show, or the later version. Or why the Dona Diana Overture wasn't used for all the programs. Anybody know?

Valerie:
These folks really know their stuff and yes its great to hear from the many different points of view be it commercials, theme music, actors, announcers, etc. I would love it if OTR could work up a chat room and we could get all these knowledgeable people in the room and pick their minds. Is that possible Lou?? |

| The place to go is to an OTR Convention.Since I keep busy in radio play-by-play sports, I have only been able to attend one convention. (My loss!) And I have been invited to serve on discussion boards, too, and could not make it!How much fun I missed because I simply have not been able to be there! There is So much GOOD stuff at the OTR Conventions! And real great OTR Fans! |

Nate -
Although I could set up a chat room here, there IS a fairly well attended OTR chat room, which has been online for about three years now. Regular meetings are on Thursday nights, but you might find somebody there at any time. Mistress of moderation is Lois Culver. (You may recognize the last name). See the local page for more info. Lou

| I just purchased a cassette (from the gift shop in a Cracker Barrell restrauant). Sgt. Preston and other radio classics are distributed by GAA Corporation, actually listed as Gaacorp, 33 Portman Road, New Rochelle, NY 10801. Telephone 914 - 576- 7660. You might also check Sound Performances Corporation at this same address and telephone number. Good Luck. Also, I had just posted a question regarding the musical theme that accompanied the opening of Sgt. Preston of the Yukon. I see that information in one of the responses you received. Thanks. Brings back a lot of good memories. |

| During the summer of 1945, I visited my married sister, who had recently moved to Albuquerque, NM. Her next-door neighbor was a sweet elderly lady named Delia Clayton; she used to occasionally provide me with cold lemonade (I was 13 at the time). One day I happened to look into the old barn-like garage, and saw a large steamer-type trunk, which had, stenciled on the outside of it, "Paul Sutton, Station WXYZ, Detroit, Michigan." It was only later that I learned that Sutton was either |
