As a youngster growing up in northwest TN I remember listening to WJJD in Chicago in the evening to a program called the "Suppertime Frolic". Can anyone recount the history of this station or this program?

Not really, Dave, although I used to hear it (more or less by default) shortly after the afternoon kids' shows (Armstrong, Mix, Midnight, etc.) ended for the day at 6 PM CST. My recall is that most of the music was C&W in nature (Ernest Tubb, Bob Wills, etc.) and that there was a conglomeration of sponsors, such as Payruna (sp?), 666 Cough Syrup, Hadacol Tonic, etc. We sometimes had WJJD (1160 KC) tuned in because it was, as I recall, the Chicago Cubs station (remember Bert Wilson ?) We viewed the evening WJJD programming as somewhat of a novelty, much as we looked upon XELO, Clint -- that's C-L-I-N-T -- Clint, Texas. Also picked up a station from DelRio, Texas, whose transmitter was across the Rio Grande in Ciudad Acuna, which allowed them to run at about 100,000 watts and boom into central Illinois.

I remember that program on WJJD in the late 40's. My parents listened to the station quite a bit. If I remember rightly the announcer's name was Randy Blake (?) and the station went off the air at sundown because it was on the same frequency as KSL in Salt Lake City. KSL was a clear channel station at night. WJJD did play country music. I always looked forward to signoff because it meant I could then change the radio to one of the programs on CBS or NBC. At that age I wasn't much of a fan of country music.
