I am the public affairs director at a PBS station in Moline IL. I would like to do a segment on "Aunt Sammy" IF I can find a script and someone in this area to interview..perhaps a relative of a woman who portrayed Aunt Sammy. I was thinking WOC Radio in Davenport IA (this same market) must have had an Aunt Sammy, since WOC is one of the oldest stations in this country, but of course everyone there was clueless as to what I was talking about. I do have several Aunt Sammy recipe books purchased through E-Bay.
Thank you for any assistance with my project. Susan McPeters WQPT-TV mcpeterss@bhc1.bhc.edu |

Probably your best bet might be to get in touch with Elizabeth McLeod. She is an expert on radio of the 20's and 30's and might be able to offer some leads or help.
Her email address is lizmcl@midcoast.com |

I have done some reaearch on AUNT SAMMY'S RADIO RECIPES (a.k.a. HOUSEKEEPER'S HALF HOUR).
It was produced by the U.S. Deptartment Of Agriculture, and was on the air from 1926 to the war years (I think 1944, but not sure of the exact date). The characters on the program were of course "Aunt Sammy" (Mrs. Uncle Sam), "Uncle Ebenezer" (Aunt Sammy's crusty old relative), "Billy" (Aunt Sammy's 6-year-old nephew), "The Next Door Neighbor" (Aunt Sammy's nosy, but warmhearted friend), "Nettie" (Aunt Sammy's car), "Cousin Susan", "The Recipe Lady" (played by Fanny Walker Yeatman), "The Menu Specialist" (played by Ruth Van Deman), "Finicky Florine", "Percy Wallington Waffle" (Fussy eater), and "Web" (Plant and garden specialist). What I have read, the program was distributed to several different regions in the country (including Maine, where I have dug up an old Aunt Sammy cookbook my great-grandmother had in her posession). The scripts were the same, but the program's cast was portrayed by local performers of those regions. As limited as this information is, I hope it will be of some help to you. < |
