| Hello! I am a High School English teacher currently seeking a recording of a radio drama known as "The Hitchhiker," written by Lucille Fletcher. The script was anthologized in a book I am using for my 10th Grade class, and I would really like to play the original recording of it for my students. The story deals with a character named Ronald Adams who is persued by a ghostly hitchhiker across the country. Orson Welles may have been involved in the production (there is some indication of this in the script). I would really appreciate any help in locating a copy of this show. Please email me if you have any leads. Thanks! Brooks E. Hefner bhefner@hotmail.com |

Brooks,
There exist many sources for the forementioned 'Hitchhicker' and these can be found on the Program schedule (main table of contents) below. This information is available at FAQ #6 and #3. To help you on your way: 'The Hitchhicker' was performed on CBS' 'Suspense' on 9/2/42 and starred Orson Welles. There may be other performances available. Happy OTR hunting, 'Spanish' Pete PS It really would have made my day if your last name was Brooks and you were an English teacher (at Madison High) as this is the basis of the OTR show "Our Miss Brooks'. |

The first airing of this story (along with "A Sonnet from the Portugese" as a filler) was on 11-17-1941 on the "MERCURY THEATER" during its Lady Esther sponsorship. It starred Orson Welles, Lurene Tuttle, Ray Collins, and Agnes Moorhead. This broadcast has not survived.
The next broadcast was the 9-2-1942 "SUSPENSE" airing also starring Orson Welles. This is available for download at the painfully slow, but huge and eclectic Interocitor OTR Vault (see the link below). Thirdly, there was a rebroadcast on the "MERCURY SUMMER THEATER" 6-21-1946, again with Orson Welles. While this is also available; I know of no site from which to download it. While I first became aquainted with old time radio outside of school (eight grade in the mid 1970s), a strong exsposure came from an English teacher's elective class. In it we preformed an episode of the "SHADOW" from the script as well a |
